  4. DESCRIPTION
  5. TrayText allows you to specify up to 14 autotext items (stock phrases
  6. or "boilerplate" text), available to any application by clicking the
  7. TrayText icon in the system tray.
  8.  
  9. At the moment you may have your autotext or boilerplate text set up in
  10. your word-processor - but what about when you are using an e-mail
  11. program, a database or desktop publisher?
  12.  
  13. How often have you wanted to insert a stock phrase into an application
  14. and had to type it because it was stored in another? It could be your
  15. address, your e-mail signature, even your name. TrayText is the simple
  16. answer.
  17.  
  18. Up to 14 (3 in the unregistered version) of your favourite text items
  19. can be stored (up to 32kB each), and are then available to any
  20. application with two mouse-clicks. Left-click the TrayText icon in the
  21. tray, and a menu will appear showing the text items you have stored.
  22. Click the item you want and it will be "typed" in for you in the
  23. application you are using. Alternatively, open up the menu with a
  24. left-click then type the underlined number associated with the item to
  25. be inserted.

  27. There is a shortcut to the text stored as item number 1 - simply
  28. double-click the TrayText icon with the left mouse-button. You can
  29. store the phrase you use most often there, for ease of access.

  31. ** When you first run TrayText it is set up with one text item already
  32. stored. To see a demonstration of TrayText, run Notepad (or any word-
  33. processor), left-click the TrayText icon, then select item 1 which says
  34. "Run Notepad and click me!" (or just left double-click the icon). Then
  35. watch! **

  37. A keyboard shortcut is available so that you can set up a combination
  38. of keys (eg Ctrl-Alt-T) which, when pressed, will bring up the left-
  39. click menu. Then type the number associated with the item you want and
  40. the text is inserted. Your hands have never left the keyboard!

  42. TrayText also has a useful spike feature for collecting text from
  43. different documents or applications ready to insert in another document
  44. or application.
  45.  
  46. Different sets of text items may be stored as files with the type
  47. .ttt - thus different sets may be constructed for different purposes.
  48. When TrayText is started it uses the set which was in use when it was
  49. last run. The default which TrayText starts with is TrayText.ttt.

  51. With the registered version you can even run TrayText more than once -
  52. have several "instances" of TrayText, each with an icon in the tray,
  53. and each with a different set of text items.

  55. TIP: Because TABs and ENTERs can be included in a text item, TrayText
  56. can automate the filling in of many dialog boxes or forms. For example,
  57. to fill in a password request dialog, make a text item with your name,
  58. a TAB, your password, and an ENTER. TrayText can then automatically
  59. type in your name, move to the next field, type the password, and
  60. select OK. [Note that TrayText must be in Insert mode for this to
  61. work.]

  69. LIMITATIONS:
  70. Inserting or pasting text to an MS-DOS window is not supported.
  71. TrayText will detect the window title "MS-DOS Prompt" and inform you
  72. that it cannot insert to it, but if your MS-DOS window has a different
  73. title, TrayText will not insert or paste text as expected.

  75. Inserting or pasting text to a combo-box (edit control with a down
  76. arrow at the right to open a list) may not produce the required result.

  81. TO INSTALL:
  82. TrayText is distributed in two forms; as a self-extracting .exe (which
  83. may be called traytx6c.exe), or as a .zip file (which may be called
  84. traytx6c.zip). If you have the .exe version, simply double-click it to
  85. run, and follow the setup instructions.

  87. If installing from the .zip file, copy all the files in the .zip file
  88. (TrayText.exe, TrayText.dll, TrayText.ttt, TrayText.hlp, TrayText.cnt,
  89. readme.txt, order.txt and file_id.diz) to a new folder; for convenience
  90. you could call this folder "TrayText". To run, double-click
  91. TrayText.exe.

  93. To set TrayText to run at startup, either choose "Yes" when given this
  94. option if installing from an .exe file, or create a shortcut for it in
  95. your StartUp folder, normally found at c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
  96. (Hint: Using the Explorer, right click and drag TrayText.exe; drop into
  97. the StartUp folder; choose "Create Shortcut Here" from the popup menu.)

  100. TO UNINSTALL:
  101. TrayText copies no other files, so to uninstall, simply remove the
  102. folder and files mentioned above. Or if you have installed using an
  103. .exe file, go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, and select
  104. TrayText; or select the Uninstall icon in the TrayText program group.

  107. TO REGISTER:
  108. TrayText is a shareware program. When first run it displays:
  109. "Evaluation Version" and gives 3 text items and the Spike for a period
  110. of 28 days. After that it automatically becomes the "Unregistered
  111. Version" and has the same 3 text items available, but no Spike. If you
  112. wish to continue using TrayText after 28 days, you should register.
  113.  
  114. The Registered Version gives 11 new text items, making 14 in total, and
  115. lets you keep the Spike feature. It also allows the possibility of
  116. multiple instances. You can convert to the Registered Version at any
  117. time by entering the registration number you will be given by mail or
  118. e-mail.

  120. Benefits of registering are:
  121. ╖ 11 new text items, making 14 altogether.
  122. ╖ The Spike feature - not available after 28 days - is kept / restored.
  123. ╖ The possiblity of running more than one "instance" of TrayText at a
  124.   time.
  125. ╖ The welcome box which appears at startup (and daily after 28 days)
  126.   can be turned off.

  180. DISTRIBUTION:
  181. You may distribute the unregistered version freely, but please make
  182. sure that TrayText.exe and the associated files are kept together -
  183. preferably in the original .zip or .exe file.

  185. If TrayText is to be distributed on a read-only medium such as CD-ROM,
  186. then it is strongly recommended that the self-extracting .exe file with
  187. Setup routine is used (it may be called traytx6c.exe), rather than the
  188. .zip file or individual uncompressed files. This is because (1) if the
  189. user tries to run TrayText directly from a CD-ROM it will give an error
  190. message because the text data file is read-only, and (2) if Explorer
  191. is used to copy the files to a hard drive the read-only attribute is
  192. preserved; TrayText will fix this, but it is preferable to use the .exe
  193. version. This can be downloaded via

  197. VERSION HISTORY:
  198. 6.0    Initial release dated October 17 1996
  199. 6.0a    If TrayText was installed from a CD-ROM, Explorer copied the
  200.     read-only attribute of the files; this meant that the program
  201.     could not write to the file TrayText.ttt to store user text.
  202.     Version 6.0a corrects this by removing the read-only attribute
  203.     if it is found.
  204.     Some internal program timings were lengthened to correct some
  205.     copying and inserting problems reported by users with a slow
  206.     system.
  207.     Version 6.0a is also available as a self-extracting .exe file.
  208. 6.0b    On selecting "New" to start a new .ttt file, and then "Cancel"
  209.     from the resulting Setup dialog, the .ttt file being used
  210.     immediately before pressing "New" is now restored (previously
  211.     "Cancel" left the user with an empty .ttt file).
  212. 6.0c    Bug which occurred if menu text entered with exactly 30
  213.     characters now fixed.
  214.     Certain back-up programs would not back up the current .ttt
  215.     file unless TrayText was closed; now fixed.
  216.     TrayText remembers last file used when selecting "Exit"; now
  217.     also remembered when TrayText is closed at the end of a Windows
  218.     session.
